In the southern Rhône Valley, red wines hold a special place. Sun-drenched, generous and expressive, they tell the story of their terroir with sincerity. One question often comes up at the estate: what is the difference between our Côtes du Rhône red wines and our Plan de Dieu red wines?
The answer lies in the soil, the climate, the yields and, of course, in the glass.
Côtes du Rhône red is a broad and emblematic appellation of the southern Rhône. It allows for a wide range of styles while maintaining a common signature of fruit and suppleness.
The Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu goes a step further in terms of requirements. The area is precisely defined and production rules are stricter. Yields are lower, allowing for a more intense expression of the terroir.
Our Côtes du Rhône red wines represent the Rhône at its most convivial and approachable.
Our Plan de Dieu red wines express a deeper, more structured side of this same vineyard.
Côtes du Rhône vineyards are most often planted on limestone and stony soils. These soils bring freshness and produce supple, balanced red wines that are easy to enjoy.
In Plan de Dieu, the landscape changes. Vines are rooted in deep, rich clay-limestone soils that retain water even during very hot summers. These clay soils ensure steady ripening and concentration.
This terroir gives our Plan de Dieu red wines their natural depth and density.
In the glass, the difference is immediate.
Our Côtes du Rhône red wines show aromas of red fruits such as cherry and raspberry. The palate is supple and generous, offering immediate pleasure and an inviting style.
Our Plan de Dieu red wines develop more intense aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, enhanced by notes of spice and garrigue. The palate is fuller, longer and more powerful.
These are red wines with real character.
Plan de Dieu benefits from generous sunshine and deliberately lower yields. Each vine produces fewer grapes, but grapes with greater concentration.
This results in red wines that are more powerful and structured, with greater richness. Our Côtes du Rhône reds are perfect to enjoy young, while our Plan de Dieu reds can age for several years and gain complexity over time.
The difference in yields between the two appellations plays a key role. In Plan de Dieu, producing less means producing better. Each cluster concentrates more aromas and structure, resulting in wines that are more intense and persistent.
This balance between generosity and precision is at the heart of our work at Domaine Tourbillon.
The name Plan de Dieu comes from the Latin Campus Dei, meaning “the plain of God”. Long considered a windswept and difficult land to cultivate, this area has always produced wines of character. After years of recognition as Côtes du Rhône Villages, Plan de Dieu obtained its geographical designation in 2005, affirming its identity among the great appellations of the southern Rhône.
Choosing our Côtes du Rhône red wines means choosing a warm, accessible and fruity wine, ideal for everyday meals and convivial moments.
Choosing our Plan de Dieu red wines means seeking more power, more depth and a strong sense of terroir, perfect with grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes or a generous table.
